French Revolution (1789 - 1799)
Causes
• Unfair taxes
• Poor treatment of the 3rd Estate (peasants) by the 1st Estate (aristocrats)
• Widespread poverty
Major Events
• Formation of the National Assembly. This took eventually took power from King Louis XVI, and gave it to the commoners who formed a Republic.
• Storming of the Bastille. Plays a role in AToTC and is an important early victory for the National Assembly.
• A Constitution is written that declares that people have the right to property, liberty, and security. Gives the new government official power.
• The Reign of Terror, where 16,000 people are guillotined. Darnay is imprisoned during this phase of the revolution.
• Napoleon Bonaparte gains control as a dictator after winning a series of wars. He declares the French Revolution over 10 years after it started.
